This Wooden Being was inspired by Esperanza Spalding—one of the great young jazz musicians of today. Growing up in an area of Portland known for gang violence, struggling with juvenile arthritis and raised by a single parent, Esperanza persisted. Hearing YoYo Ma play the cello on “Mister Rogers Neighborhood” at the age of 5 inspired her to play music. She’s won 5 Grammy Awards, taught at Harvard and Berklee, and played the world over.
