Mary Poppins — PRACTICALLY PERFECT
Though a look-alike stuntwoman was used for some of the umbrella soaring scenes, Julie Andrews did most of the MARY POPPINS umbrella flying scenes herself.
Andrews wrote in her autobiography., “In one of my last takes, I’d been hanging in the rafters for quite a while, waiting for the tech team to be ready. Suddenly I felt my supporting wires drop by about a foot. I became extremely nervous, and called down to the stage manager below…” She asked to be let down gently but her wires gave out and she dropped to the stage. “I fell to the stage like a ton of bricks.” Andrews recalls. “I have to admit, I let fly a stream of colorful expletives.”
This coupled with the “blown-away nanny scene” and the calculation that a 100 square foot umbrella would be needed for Julie Andres to float safely to the ground lead to the creation of this tongue and cheek piece.
Dimensions: 15” tall, 8” square (approx)
